Looking for a cookie that’s buttery, soft, and just melts in your mouth? These Viennese Whirls are a classic British treat made with rich butter, soft shortbread-like texture, and a swirl design that makes them look as good as they taste. Perfect with tea, coffee, or as a festive gift, these butter cookies are simple yet elegant.
Once I started baking I tried a lot of cookies but these homemade Viennese Whirls are one of my all time favourite. These soft butter cookies are so rich in butter that they just melt in your mouth and you definitely cannot stop at just one. My kids love it and in order to make them more rich, I drizzle them with finely chopped or ground almonds and pistachios. This makes them crunchy and enhances the flavour as well.
The cookie batter has to be piped through a piping bag using a star tip or any tip of your choice. Now as you are piping, you can also play with the shape of these cookies - make them round, a heart, square or anything your imagination tells you.
So, its not just the taste of these easy Viennese Whirls that I like but also the process of making them, its fun piping them.
But beware these classic Viennese Whirls are too delicate to handle, they have to be handled with care as they are so soft and buttery.
After baking the cookies allow them to cool completely before removing them from the baking tray. The cookies become hard after cooling and are easy to handle, if you remove them before they are cooled completely, the cookies will break and become powdery.
